Harmonics Files for XTide

The following files may be downloaded by anonymous FTP from ftp://harmonics.unh.edu/xtide/.

• Harmonics files.  Note: We are in the process of migrating to a new file format.

  • harmonics.tcd.gz, all stations(primary and secondary). 
    Only useable with XTide version 2.6. 
  • harmonics.txt.gz, all primary stations.

    Only useable with XTide versions 2.4 and 2.5. 
  • offsets.xml.gz, subordinate/secondary stations.

    Only useable with XTide versions 2.4 and 2.5.

The XTide distribution

XTide is software for Unix and X11.  It will not work under Microsoft Windows unless you carefully read the information contained in the ports page.

• The XTide program.
  • xtide-2.6.4.tar.gz, XTide 2.6.  Requires that you download and install harmonics.tcd.gz.
  • xtide-2.5.tar.gz, Final frozen version of XTide 2.5. 
    Requires that you download and install both harmonics.txt.gz and offsets.xml.gz.
  • xtide-2.4.tar.gz, Final frozen version of XTide 2.4.  
    Requires that you download and install both harmonics.txt.gz and offsets.xml.gz.
  • xtide-1.6.2.tar.gz, FInal frozen version of XTide 1.   The final revision of XTide 1.
    
  
  
  
  • The Java applets for XTide are no longer supported.  There will be no Java support in XTide 2.  However, the unmaintained, unsupported Java applets can still be downloaded from xtide_java_jdk1.0.tar.gz.  The JDK 1.1 update, xtide_java_jdk1.1.tar.gz, was never finished.
  
  
  
• World Vector Shoreline data for optional use with XTide 2.5 or newer.  41 megs.  According to Jan C. Depner, these files were published on the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) Global Relief Data CD-ROM and are public domain.  If 41 megs is too much to download, there are alternatives:
  • By leaving out a file that is usually redundant and compressing with bzip2 instead of gzip, the size goes down to 34 megs.  Get this version at http://people.debian.org/~psg/xtide-coastline-20020226.tar.bz2.
  • Or, you can download files individually and make do with the lower resolutions.  Find the individual files in ftp://harmonics.unh.edu/xtide/wvs_unpacked/.

XTide has been included in the Fedora Project.  Source and binary XTide RPMs can be downloaded from their repositories (thanks to David M. Kaplan).

Black magic for experts only

• tcd-utils.tar.gz by Jan Depner:  build_tide_db to convert harmonics.txt, offsets.xml, and NAVO formats to harmonics.tcd; restore_tide_db to generate harmonics.txt and offsets.xml from harmonics.tcd; and tideEditor to edit harmonics.tcd directly.  All three utilities require libtcd, which is included with XTide.  tideEditor furthermore requires Qt 3.0.5 or compatible version.
• PDF documentation for libtcd and the TCD format:  Jan Depner, "Format for the Oceanographic and Atmospheric Master Library (OAML) Tide Constituent Database", rev. 2002-09-21, and accompanying notes and corrections by David Flater.
• seasonal_corrections.xls, a spreadsheet for approximating Sa and Ssa from Admiralty-style seasonal corrections.  (Contributed by Jan Depner.)
• congen-1.3.tar.gz, software for generating equilibrium arguments and node factors.
• congen_input.txt, input file for congen.

• harmgen-2.2-r2.tar.gz, program to derive harmonic constants from water level observations.  Requires Octave.  Note: the current harmonics.txt cannot be used as-is with harmgen because it contains multiple constituents with the same frequency.  You must reduce the constituent set before running harmgen.
• harmbase-2001-08-07.tar.gz, harmonic constant management system.  Requires Postgres (see README).
• converters.tar.gz, software to convert (1) From Ed Wallner's TIDES 4 format to XTide's harmonics file format; (2) From XTide format to TIDES 4 format; (3) From the NOS data file format to XTide format.  These converters were obsoleted by Harmbase, which incorporates better conversions.  You also need to download the mapfile to use these.  Last revision 1997-08-09.
• map.txt, map file for use with the preceding conversion software.  Last revision 2001-01-15.
